The MADDS Edit

Brand strategy is the sentence you can repeat.

Say it once. Who it’s for, what you sell, why you.

Strategy sounds like a workshop with sticky notes. For a small business it is ruder and shorter. Who is it for. What do you sell. Why you, in one sentence a customer can repeat to a friend.

If that sentence is “we elevate experiences,” you don’t have a strategy. You have a fog machine. I wrote the longer version in pretty is not a marketing strategy. The look can be gorgeous. It still has to say what the job is.

Put the sentence where a stranger already looks

A sentence in a document is not a strategy. It has to show up in the three places people actually read before they call. If those three disagree, you are still choosing a mood per platform.

WhereThe sentence’s job
The homepage, first screenWhat you sell, before the story of how you started.
The Instagram bioThe same job, short enough to read without “more.”
The Google descriptionThe same job again. Not a second slogan.

Try it on one customer you already have. Write who they were, what they bought, and why they picked you, in the words they used. If you can’t do that without “elevate” or “bespoke,” you don’t have the sentence yet. Say it out loud. If a friend can’t repeat it, it is still fog.

Colors come after that. The longer version of “the look is not the offer” is the essay linked above. The one-day version, mark plus sentence plus one page of rules, starts at $497. If you already have the sentence and the site is the hole, skip the brand day and look at the website.

Colors, type, and a logo are how the sentence stays recognizable next month. They are not a substitute for it. I have watched owners redraw the mark twice because the offer was still unclear. The new mark didn’t fix the sentence. It just made the confusion more expensive.

You also don’t need a brand book the size of a lease. You need the mark, a light version and a dark version, the words you use, and enough rules that the next post doesn’t invent a new business.

Write this firstA usable answer
Who it’s forThe person who already pays you, not “everyone.”
What you sellThe job, in the words they would type.
Why youOne fact a friend could repeat. Not a mood.

That package is Brand In A Day. If the strategy is still a knot, and you want it talked through before anyone draws, start with the project form and say the offer is the problem. I’d rather hear that than design around it.

If this is the job, say so.

Tell me what’s missing. I’ll tell you which door it is before anyone starts.
