The MADDS Edit

Your business deserves main character energy.

By Madison Fine, founder of MADDS Marketing

Your business deserves main character energy. Take ownership. Show up. Stand out.

I almost rejected “main character energy” on my own business card. It sounded a little too internet. A little too “everything revolves around me.” And that’s not what I want MADDS to represent. Then I read more about it, and the positive side clicked: taking ownership of your story.

Verywell Mind describes main character energy as investing in yourself and recognizing that your needs matter while staying aware of your impact on others. The article emphasizes authenticity and making room for other people. That balance is what makes the idea useful to me, and there’s a business lesson in it.

You put time, money, skill, and probably a few tears into your business. You care about what you deliver. You know how much work happens behind the scenes. Then someone asks what you do, and suddenly it’s, “Oh, I just have a little business.” Just? You handle customers, solve problems, make decisions, and keep something moving that would not exist without you. You can describe that with confidence.

That confidence needs to show up in your marketing, too. If your website barely explains your services, your best work never gets posted, and people have to dig to figure out how to hire you, you’re giving them very little to work with. Your business deserves a proper introduction.

When I talk about main character energy for a brand, I’m talking about presence: a clear offer, a recognizable look, a website you’re excited to send someone, and content that sounds like an actual person with something useful to say. You don’t need to manufacture a personality or copy whatever the biggest account in your industry is doing. Start with what’s already there. Your perspective, your standards, your work, and the reason customers choose you.

If you’re funny, let some humor through. If you’re direct, be direct. If you care deeply about the details, show people those details. You can have a polished brand and still sound like yourself. That’s the sweet spot I care about at MADDS.

Here’s where the idea needs some balance. You’re taking ownership of your business story, but your customer arrives with a story of their own. They have a problem, a goal, a budget, and questions they need answered. Your marketing should connect those two stories. Show the work you’re proud of, then explain why it matters to them. Tell your founder story, then connect it to the standards you bring to the job. Introduce your service, then make the next step easy to understand. A beautiful website can catch someone’s attention. Clear information helps them decide whether to contact you. Both deserve your attention.

A bold brand creates an expectation, and your business has to meet it. That means answering inquiries, explaining your process, delivering what you promised, and keeping customers informed. The experience after someone says yes should feel as considered as the marketing that brought them in. This is why MADDS brings together Business Launch and Growth Management. Getting your business ready to be seen and maintaining that presence both take work. The branding, website, content, and ongoing marketing should support the business you actually run and help people understand its value.

I know what it feels like to have people form an opinion before they understand your story. Building MADDS has given me a place to show what I can do through the work itself. That’s the energy I want other business owners to have. Post the project. Explain the offer. Put your name on the work. Give someone a clear way to hire you. You can be proud of what you’ve created and still be curious, thoughtful, and willing to improve.

Your business deserves to be seen. Let’s give people a reason to remember it.
